Strengths of Uganda Christian University Print E-mail

Uganda Christian University (UCU) brings together something old and something new. UCU was established in 1997 on the historic foundation and site of Bishop Tucker Theological College, the oldest institution for higher education in Uganda (1913).

Its 86-acre campus is ideally located just outside the capital city of Kampala. The lush greenery of its hillside campus makes for a beautiful and conducive atmosphere for study and fellowship. Three kilometres down the road to Kampala is another one square mile of land that is being developed into the science campus.

A decade since its founding, Uganda Christian University has:

  • Grown from 120 students to 7000;

  • Offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in faculties of law, business administration, social science, education, theology, science and technology;

  • Put an emphasis on the development of applied science and technology, offering courses in information technology, computer science, nursing, public health, science education and “agriculture with entrepreneurship”;

  • Began a course in Library and Information Science in 2006;

  • Added a constituent college in Western Uganda, Bishop Barham University College. UCU also has study centers in the eastern and northern regions;

  • Received a Government Charter in 2004, the highest level of accreditation in the country, and the first of its kind ever issued to a private university;

  • Been mentioned in a ranking of the top 100 universities in Africa, and the only one other than Makerere University;

  • Become a member of the Association of African Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Inter-University Council of East Africa, and it was the first affiliate from Africa of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (USA);

  • Gained a high reputation in Uganda, attracting some of the best high school students to its programs.
