The Safe Motherhood day, dubbed, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Nation’s Day will be the first of its kind in what is expected to become an annual event to promote awareness of the plight of mothers in Uganda.

The event will take place on March 6, 2010 and was organised to fall on the Saturday just before women’s day.
Save the Mothers (STM) Network co-ordinator, Jacqueline Nassimbwa said that the event will be held in two sessions that will run concurrently.
“One session will be a meeting in Nkoyoyo Hall to highlight the importance of Safe Mother Hood, while the other will be provision of clinical services to the community at Agape Square,” she said.
The programme which starts at 9am is expected to end at about 4pm.
Nassimbwa also added that the meeting would raise national awareness and advocacy for safe motherhood.
“We expect about 500 guests to converge at Nkoyoyo Hall and Agape Square,” She noted.
The event may certainly create networks with other stakeholders in improving maternal health, increase awareness about maternal health issues and highlight the hurdles behind the poor statistics.
It is also hoped that the community will access health services like cervical and breast cancer screening, family planning services and VCT services among others free of charge.
“STM alumni will also disseminate research findings on that day while some individuals will be recognised for the contribution that they have made in promoting Safe Motherhood,” Nassimbwa said.
