New 'mothers' at children's library

By Peggy Noll, :: 11-05-2010

Peggy Noll recieves a farewell token from incoming library coordinator, Rosie Button (Left) at the handover and inception of new library volunteers last month.

Volunteers at the UCU Children’s Library gathered on April 24 for the handover of the role of Coordinator of the library from Mrs. Peggy Noll to Mrs. Rosie Button.  Both ladies have worked with the library since before its official opening on May 28, 2006.

The volunteers presented Mrs. Noll with two children’s books with African settings and a card of thanks.  Then all joined in a cup of tea, a snack, and the opportunity to discuss their shared passion for children and books.
Hours will remain the same, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons from 3-5; Wednesday mornings 10 to noon with a story time at 10:30; and Sundays after Sunday school. Recently, many new books have appeared on the shelves from a shipment sent by Truro Church in Virginia USA. At least forty children visit the library every week and check out a book. During school holidays we run informal “Reading Challenges.” All fulltime staff and students are reminded that they are eligible to register their children at the library for no charge.
Mrs. Noll announced that the Children’s Library would be joining the Uganda Community Libraries Association (UgCLA) at the urging of its founding director, Professor Kate Parry.  Professor Parry visited the library in March and was delighted with the facility and the books.  UCU will be the 60th library in the Association, though most are small and have a few children’s books in them.
Mrs. Button said that she is happy to take over the role of co-ordinator as she has loved working in the library and is glad to see so many children reading and enjoying books. Her own children are regulars at the library.
The volunteers present were Mary Mills, Moses Duche, Rose Wanda, Vivienne Sempereza, Sarah, and Pheonah Nabayozi.  Anne Tweheyo is also a volunteer but could not attend the handover.
