All freshmen are the same

By Zachariah Tiberindwa, :: 07-09-2010

I am told the freshers have already carried their souls into the gates of the center of Excellence in the heart of Mukono.  Unfortunately I was around at least in the first week to witness their arrival but nevertheless I am glad that finally they have joined this great institution of higher learning.

I am glad because with their coming,
 I can comfortably rejoice for having got off that curse of being a fresher. I swear I do not think you people know how excited I was in that month of August anticipating this time when UCU would import in the first lot freshers for the 2010/11 academic year.
I was so excited about this entire idea of having to witness a new lot of freshers that I spent some of my precious time in August in  one of the halls of residence of Makerere University.
 The reason why I spent such time at Makerere is that I felt kind of curious. I just wanted to know whether those freshers in Makerere are any different from freshers on this side of the world but wapi they are all the same.
Honestly I spent about two weeks of August cocooning in one of those halls of Makerere just to find one or two differences between the freshers this side with the freshers that side of the world but I can swear to you that I failed to find any difference between the behavior of UCU freshers and that of our brothers that side.
I know many of you will argue that the freshers this side had not yet reported and I could not have managed to tell how they behave because I had not seen them any way. Nonetheless, I want to assure whoever thinks like that that I was once a fresher for two years in UCU.
So when I speak about UCU freshers, it is out of experience. There is nothing I do not know about UCU freshers and besides for the two years I was a fresher I never noticed any difference between the freshers I was with in my first year of fresherhood and the freshers in my second year of fresherhood.
For example I know quite well that UCU freshers are always filled with cob webs of ignorance. They are always particularly ignorant about campus lifestyle and most of the freshers in UCU for the last two years always had this kind of village excitement for joining university. And that is exactly what I found the other side of Makerere. That is why even before I know a thing about these freshers I can bet that they will have these character traits.
Be that as it may I would just like to give a word of encouragement to our new students. Just take heart. Even when those older fellows begin making fun of you for being a fresher just laugh it off and if you can tell me please do. I will then offer to tell you some of those funny things that the so called continuing students used to do when freshers.
You can then also make fun of them and I can assure you that as long as they realize that I am involved in giving you vital information on their time of fresherhood, they will style up and stop making fun of you. Otherwise I welcome you all to UCU.
