Eating, eating and more eating is all that I did after my week of unwanted fasting or call it the week of starving. I desperately longed for my revenge against that beast. That heartless beast of hunger had treated me miserably and I needed to do something just to prove to that I too had deserved to have enough food in my stomach.
I decided for the first time in my life at UCU to visit Touch of Class. I ordered for what my young sister calls “fried kuku” or what others claim to be “siken meat.” My pockets were full and the wet season had just resumed, just a few days before that when the pockets had been reinforced with some cash after that dry and “fasting” season. I had never noticed that Touch of Class had what I think is a mini executive wing. That day the money in my pockets opened my eyes and I discovered that wing. I then headed straight for that wing. On reaching that side I pulled off that arrogant heavy cough which attracted almost every eye in the restaurant including the two eyes of the waitress. As soon as I realised that her attention had been captured I called her over. I was so excited that I did not wait for her to go through the bother of asking me for my order. Before she even said a word, my lips had already released the order “chips, chicken and tomato sauce. Nothing else. Just when she had moved one or so meters I remembered something important and that is when I bellowed out to the lady that looked back to take more of my orders “Oh! Sorry for disturbing you may be plus a 300ml bottle of Novida.” I then sat back waiting for the order but I was so anxious to have it brought to the short table that stood in-front of me that the two or three minutes that elapsed before the order was delivered seemed like eternity. Anyway soon I had the order brought to that table. You should have seen me tearing that chicken piece apart because I wanted everybody to notice that I was holding a chicken thigh in my hand at least for the first time in a sensible restaurant at UCU and indeed many of them noticed my inaugural Touch of Class experience as my teeth crushed the piece of chicken without fear or favor. When I was finally done. I stood up looked around just to ensure that they all noticed that I was the ka fellow that had been showing that piece of chicken my true colors and then stormed out of the restaurant. I simply could not wait to share such a memorable experience with my close friend Jesse and what I had done to the chicken thigh that afternoon. I ran straight to the guy and narrated to him the whole story. How it had all happened and it is then that Jesse reminded me of what had just happened the previous week and how I had been starved for four days. He then sat me down and told me “Zakaria you do not have to spend just because you have the money. Plan your expenditures, today you may have the cash yet tomorrow it will be gone.” I then thought to myself that after all when I had starved for four days I had not died as a result. “So what if all the cash gets used up and I starve again? After all it will not be the first time for me to starve” “Why should you starve when you can avoid it by planning your expenditure?” Jesse asked. At that moment, it seemed like I had started getting what Jesse was suggesting but before I could fully appreciate and comprehend his suggestion, I remembered that I had forgotten my books at Touch of Class when I stormed out of the restaurant to go and tell Jesse about my Touch of Class Experience.
