For sometime now, I have been writing about work and the Christian. This article is about how I started working despite my ‘bad and wrong choice course’. It is purposely for those who are still students and those that have joined the field.
Just trust in the Lord and you will succeed irrespective of any course you are taking. Every university course is very important. When I joined Makerere University, I was given Religious Studies, History and Music Dance and Drama (MDD). I nearly got ‘mad’ because those I came with from Kigezi High School had been given Law, Education, Social Work Social Administration, and Economics and so on yet I had performed well. But all this ‘madness’ was because of MDD! I later changed and replaced it with Sociology. It was in the second year that I decided to study Religious Studies alone up to third year (popularly known as 3.1.1) meaning I had taken three subjects in first year, one subject second year and the same subject in third year. Thinking that I had ‘landed’, many students started to tell me that I was’ wasting’ government money. By then, the government used to pay for us all fees and stationery and even gave some allowance although it was later scrapped. They said so because they could not see anything good out of Religious Studies. Many said that since I was saved, and that was enough. They claimed I should have studied ‘good, right and relevant subjects’ like some of those listed above. Is there any job out of Religious Studies? “Why shouldn’t you go to Bishop Tucker for ordination instead of wasting the government’s money?” they would say. But, I really prayed. I was the only one in Arts who had specialized in Religious Studies. The only one ‘studying for nothing’. After third year, the head of department wanted a teaching Assistant in Religious Studies and especially the one who had studies over 60% of the departmental courses. This meant that people like me of RS 3:1:1 were the ones suitable. There I was. I started the same year I completed. For over 18 years I taught at the same university in same department. The other ones, who claimed I had studied for nothing, got surprised. Many took a long time without a job. For some, I could buy them newspapers to ‘look’ for jobs. In other words I had started to earn before them yet they claimed, they had the so called’good courses. They later got jobs one by one but I was among the first ones (from my former secondary school) to get employed in such a prestigious institution. I was among the first to obtain a Masters Degree, other courses and later a PhD at a relatively early age. I am what I am because of the ‘bad course”. Praise the Lord There were also some who had studied Bachelor of library and Information Science (BLIS) and it was still new. They ‘cried” but later, they were among the best in our group to fly out of Uganda because of BLIS. Up to now, they live a good life at least at a Ugandan level, economically. BLIS students, you are sitting on a ‘gold mine.” Please UCU students, love the subjects that God gave you, in case you think that your course is not as good or as important as the others. You will succeed. What he did for others, he will do it for you. Now therefore, I urge you never to despise any course. • Read hard do not relax • Pray to the Lord, what he did for me, he can do it for you and in a better way • Be creative, do not be comfortable with one degree/course • Do not rest, press on and even get a Masters degree/PhD • In any course, you can get what you want. • And above all, come for more sharing about how you can be of great service irrespective of the courses you are taking, God the Beginning, and the End.
