UCU students who have been envying Makerere’s social internet network campuser.net now have an option of their own.
A group of ten UCU IT students have teamed up and opened an internet social networking site for their colleagues. The site which they have named the UCU connection so far has 231 students connected and they hope the number will increase to take up the majority students in future. According to Peter Magala , one of the key members in the founding group, the idea arose out of the need for UCU students to get their own site which they could identify with. Previously, a number of UCU students that were hooked onto Makerere’s campuser.net yet they did not belong there. Now with their own, they hope they may no longer need campuser.net. The founders however say they are facing the challenge of lack of finances to sustain it.They are calling on advertisers but by the time of writing this story, only one hostel, St. Maria, was advertising. They have also sold the idea to the guild for sponsorship and they say they have a got a good reception. They say the guild is considering sponsoring it. Through the site, students can now connect with each other and also get to send free SMS messages. |
