Former guild president Ganzi Muhanguzi has opened a new restaurant in Mukono just next to the UCU old gate. Porkers is a restaurant and a confectioner that has breathed new life into the restaurant businesses around the university.
“Our major aim is to bring quality services at a very friendly price to students who would have otherwise gone to get them from Kampala,” explains Ganzi. The restaurant that serves fast and local foods is newly renovated and equipped with new furniture. It has been in operation since the beginning of this semester, but officially opened its doors on 20thMay. The events at the opening included performances from former Tusker Project Fame star Stephen Oundo, and guitarist Benjamin Ssenyoyi, the vice-chancellors son. There was also the fundraising of for the Grace Namutebi Scholarship Fund (named after his mother), started by Ganzi while still in office in 2007. The restaurant employs four people and is meant to be more than just an eating place for the students. “Porkers is going to be a social meeting place for the students. We’ll have weekly activities where students will gather around,” adds Ganzi. Pork is the main dish that is served. It is prepared in all forms ranging from fried or roasted pork to hot dogs and sausages. All the pork and eggs, except for the sausages come straight from the former president’s farm in Kabembe near Mpoma in Mukono district. The menu is a mixture of local and international foods. These include cappuccino, espresso, coffee, and juice for breakfast. Katogo too is served. The restaurant has a unique feature about it. “We are probably the only restaurant in Mukono that serves pork without beer,” adds Ganzi. “We want to promote a healthy environment that is alcohol and smoke-free,” Some of the profits from the restaurant go to the Grace Namutebi Scholarship Fund. Ganzi has a vision of expanding the restaurant to universities across East Africa. Ganzi Muhanguzi was elected as UCU guild president in 2007/8 after the expulsion of Alex Waiswa over corruption. Ganzi currently works with Compassion International Uganda as the public relations manager. He has a farm in Kabembe that has 1,000 layers and 115 pigs, and employs three people there. He also owns a communications firm, GM communications. |
