On Friday June 22nd,Nkoyoyo Hall had by 7.00 pm been packed to the brim. All was set for the august play The Graduate. It was written by Omaya Daniel.
Prince Emma’s rib cracking jokes before the play lightened up the audience. Then came time for the play. Like the title suggested, the opening was characterised by a group of actors in graduation gowns. It was due to the fact that it represented the post-university pressures that loom on the horizon for most of the students in their final years. It represented situations that a number of graduates find themselves in. It brought a situation where a parent puts pressure on his or her only investment (the student) -either to find a job or marry a rich man as a way of saving the family from gutter life. The play was about the life of a young lady who after university begun experiencing all sorts of pressure from her single mother to marry a rich man who had been chosen for her. The mother had done it against her will. She married this rich man. Later on, the marriage turned into hell. Later on, after constant fights ended up in the hands of a bicycle repairer. The play is a must-watch for parents of university students. It has a clear representation of what a graduate goes through. Graduates have many times lamented about the reason why they went to school. The play is a lesson to parents who exert unnecessary pressure on their graduate children. That pressure has indeed led youths all over the world to do very heinous acts. Revolutions in the Arab world were partly sparked off by a former graduate who after being frustrated by the situation in the country decided to set himself on fire. It drew a lot of rage that resulted in some governments falling one after the other. |
