Amakula Cultural Foundation has promised to sponsor the Zuka Students’ Film Festival. This was revealed last week during a workshop organised
by the Zuka Film Club dubbed, “Film Appreciation”. The Amakula team that was led by Nathan Kiwere and Denis Onen told Zuka members that they would sponsor the festival. The workshop was attended by over 30 members from various courses. Onen told the members that one needed not to go to film school to become a film maker. He encouraged students to take up film making saying it would be one way of employing themselves. Three films were screened and used as points of discussion. They were: Mahla, Blood stones and For Today. They were used to explain some techniques of effective film making. Mahla, is a film set in Mozambiqan nuclear family. Blood Stones, on the other hand, was set in Nigeria depicting child labour of which the interest of the crowd was nonetheless the effective use of child actors to portray the message. The most appreciated film was ‘For Today’. Zuka members liked the creativity that was used in the film. It employed suspense and a child actor to convey a message of hunger and negligence of street children by society. Commenting on the film,Onen said that the best technique used was suspense created and the Ethiopian music that was used in the background. His counterpart Kiwere, on the other hand, promised to assist the young club grow. He said they wanted to establish a working relationship with the club as a way of raising young film makers. He said they were going to extend support to the club in form of equipment , technical knowledge, movies for screening and also films for Movie Nights. “This relationship will benefit the club by exposing it to possible film sponsors, national and international publicity and opportunities for students’ films to participate in film festivals in the country, East Africa and internationally,”he said. The Zuka students Film Festival is slated to take place from 23rd-25th September at Nsambya Sharing Hall.The Zuka Foundation which conducts the festival founded by Eddie Oketcho, gives opportunities for film club to showcase students’ films at the two- day festival. |
