UCU guild president Chrysostom Akwech is one of the latest victims to taxi robbers. He was on Monday 19 September robbed while travelling with a friend in a taxi from Bunga, a Kampala suburb in Kampala. After taking his belongings, the thives pushed him out of the taxi and as a result sutained injuries on his arms and legs.
Akwech says it all began when he was tricked by one of the thieves who threw down coins and told him to help pick them up. On bending to pick the coins, the thieves reached out for his pocket and removed money and his wallet. As the taxi went on, he realised that he and his friend were in a taxi of thieves and he decided not to raise an alarm knowing that this would make them do more harm to him. He however wanted to get out at the slightest stop. When the taxi stopped, he was just pushed out and sustained injuries in process. He has been recieving treatment from his brother’s clinic in Namuwongo. He was visited by a team of five guild officials . He says he knows the number plate of the vehicle and has recorded a statement with the Kabalagala police. Among the things that he lost were his identity card and driving permit. The Vice President, Diana Muyama, is acting in his absence. He however says that he is recovering and will be in office soon. He has cautioned students to watch out for the taxis especially at night because they could be the next victims. |
