New semester, new fees structure, new friends, foes and a whole new season. In keeping with the theme of freshness, the UCU Film Club in conjunction with the Department of Mass Communication, is gearing up to host the first ZUKA students Film Festival right here at UCU, Mukono on 25 September 2010 starting at 9 am.
The event, the first of its kind is an avenue for up and coming filmmakers to showcase their talents and share their vision with their peers and the world. The word ZUKA is derived from the Kiswahili word pambazuka which means emerge or arise. So far, 3 schools have confirmed their attendance, these schools, St Lawrence University, Namilyango College and Kabojja Secondary School have already confirmed participation while others are expected to confirm soon. Also expected are more students submitting their films and experimental projects with film. It is not too late to submit, this event is yours and provided the film is relevant to this year’s festival theme it will be aired. “There will be awards handed out at the closing ceremony starting at 6pm on the 25 September to film productions that caught the audience’s eye and to make it more interesting we will need more submissions.” An official said. The theme of this festival is Stories of Our Tomorrow. The idea is to encourage students and the youth in general, to take charge of their lives and mould the world in their image. We are tomorrow and we should not lose sight of this fact, in the words of Mahatma Gandhi “be the change you want to see in the world”. Putting together an event of this kind is hard work and the film club welcomes all the help it can get. In particular we need volunteers who are committed and willing to give their time to ZUKA, she is very demanding, be warned. Needless to say this is history in the making and its being made right here in UCU so consciously or not the entire UCU student body is involved.
