Campus is to receive a new definition. This is likely to be done through a movie entitled Campus Times.
The movie that premiers at UCU’s Nkoyoyo hall this week stars a number of students from UCU and students from other Ugandan universities and is meant to be a guide for freshman students, especially those getting out of parental curfew for the very fast time. “The movie is about campus life, the life that students lead while on campus, the happy times and the sad ones,” said Kenneth Asiimwe Kizito, the project coordinator and final year student of Bachelor of Project Planning and Entrepreneurship at UCU. The two-hour full feature movie was shot at different locations in and around campus and took about five weeks to complete. “We came up with the story idea during the May to September long holiday and shooting started immediately thereafter,” said Kizito. Written and directed by Moses Ray, a former university student himself, the movie addresses the topics of relationships, hard economic times and the laxity that students develop towards education especially when they get to campus. A large portion of the movie is shot at UCU campus some of it using campus amenities like buildings, vehicles and classrooms among others. “We got the permission to use UCU facilities from relevant authorities and then moved out to secure the permission of especially hostel owners and we are very grateful for their support,” Kizito added. Like many of the student initiated projects at UCU, the makers of the ‘Campus Times’ movie had their fair share of challenges, from finances to students who did not want to take part and also the reluctance of some facility owners at granting permission to use them. “In the beginning it was hard to get students to feature in the movie, they mostly feared because they had no previous acting experience but eventually we got along,” said Kizito. He added that the other challenges were in using the facilities of The St Michael Group of hostels, The Ankrah Foundation and UCU. The management of CyberVision, who own the rights to the movie Campus Times, has something in store for the community but that is coming up sometime next year. They also hope to show case the movie at the Kenya Film Festival that is slated for the coming month (November). While the movie mainly targets freshmen, it has an element for all audience who make up the UCU students community because it affects all students. |
