And we are shopping for the new semester!

A new semester means new stuff. Or  just the old stuff but in a new light. You throw away those used up cans and bottles, replace, restock and refill where appropriate.
Then there is looking for house; sometimes you need to move from the old one whose bathroom had no proper drainage, the one where you just could not stand the property owner or maybe the roommate.

For others you have been living under the protection of the university but now that fresh students have come it is time to find aboard in a hostel.
And we need not mention how, for luck of a more appropriate word, different starting a house can be.
Regardless of your position there is a serious need for that checklist that should cover the basics.. That pretty much sums up the beginning of the begining of the semester.  At least before the lectures start.
You need to get these areas right first.

Finding house
These are many; they come in all shapes, sizes and prices. It is precisely why finding one can get so frustrating.
Ideally, searching for a hostel should be done prior to the beginning of the semester, quiet frankly just to be organised.
When you are busy in those queues, fighting to register the last thing you should be thinking about is where you are going to lay your head for the night.
A place that is near the university is ideal. Or at least  one with a shuttle to get you to campus just in time for lectures on one of those mornings.
You should also look out for areas such as security; here am talking about a gate and a security guard, the toilets and bathrooms, wash lines, water availability among others.
I mean you probably will be there for four months so leave no stone unturned.

Household items
These include brooms, stands, trashcans, reading table.
For those who cook their own food you need a stove and paraffin to go with it. You may also need a bag of charcoal and a charcoal stove.
Durable items such as cooking oil, salt, sugar, rice, eggs, spaghetti, posho, should be stocked.

Food Items such as matooke, Irish potatoes can also be bought but be careful to make sure they are put on the cold floor as that’s the local way of keeping them from going bad.
You need utensils: Saucepans; cutlery like forks, spoons and knives should not miss in your little place.
Also, remember to purchase cups and plates. Basically, what you have grown up using in your day to day life should be part of your little place.
You need to be comfortable in your room to avoid begging from the neighbours.

Your wardrobe
Surely you should be  farmiliar with the dresscode or have heard of it. Well, welcome to Rome, now dress like the Romans.
Descent is the criterion for whatever you choose to wear, regardless of the course. Get started!
