“As for me, I don’t care what it takes. All I know is that I have to be rich and famous!” These were the words of a fellow campus student which
really got me thinking about many people’s perception of success. For many, success means two things; fame and money. They feel that these two define who they are. Others believe success will not only buy them love from the opposite sex, but also respect from society. With this in mind, sleepless nights are spend thinking hard how to get rich and famous. But is this what success is all about? And if so, then is that the kind that will really bring satisfaction? Or are we simply mislead? I have come to learn that satisfaction only comes from our intimate relationships; with friends, family and with God. These relationships suffer when one gets obsessed with success. It is easy to say, ‘I am so busy’ or ‘I can’t talk to you now’ or ‘I have such a tight schedule’ and the many other excuses one can come up with. Yet these are persons who love and care about us the most. Interestingly, we tend to think that these people whom we put off will be so excited when we succeed! We actually expect praises from them at the point of our success, yet we only push them away. The time we would have spent making beautiful memories, we were too busy for them. I believe this is not the point of life. It is not about working yourself silly, acquiring all this massive wealth and fame and then eventutaly involving those close to you. It is vice versa. You involve those close to you right from the very start. You create time for them; you love and treasure them. And get it right that worldly success does not make people love you more; it only makes people love your wallet more! Let people love you for who you are, not for what you have achieved. Life is too short for us not to be the friend, father, brother, sister that we ought to be. In as much as you are good at what you do, do not be blinded by your responsibilities or dreams. When your intimate relationships are intact, the visionary in you becomes even more strengthened to achieve more. Your intimate relationships come before your struggle for success. God bless you. |
