Discussion on the fees deadline policy dominated the meeting between the guild and members of the university cabinet. The students leaders on 9th September met the VC ,DVC Academic Affairs and DVC DER. They raised a number of complaints which they said were affecting them. Throughout the discussions, the VC and the two DVCs easily explained various issues but the issue of fees deadlines took them a lot of time.
The student leaders demanded that the fees deadlines and penalty fees charged be changed but the university administrators said the deadlines were inevitable because without them, there would be no order in the payment of fees. The VC and DVC Academic Affairs explained to the student leaders that fees deadlines were necessary in the running of the university and that what students should focus on is thinking of ways in which to help the needy students. When it came to the matter of the 10 percent annual tuition fees increment, the Vice Chancellor told the student leaders that the 10 percent annual increment was even below the current inflation rate that stands at 21.4 percent. “As long as the cost of living increases, the cost of running the university is inevitable,” he said. Other matters that the students presented during the meeting included the university administration not taking the general assembly seriously, storage of student’s property during holidays, provision of revision chairs in the compound among others. |
