Spiritual growth is a lifelong pursuit. We grow in spiritual maturity moment by moment. Just like physical exercise, if we stop exercise, our bodies may not show the results of inactivity for a while, but one day, we wake up and everything is sagging in all the wrong places.
As Christians, it should be natural for us to want to grow spiritually. We look at Acts 13:22 and acknowledge that God considered David as a man after his own heart. Just as the early church of Corinth grew day by day, we ought to attain our spiritual growth so we can harmoniously commune with God. Here are some of the steps to making this kind of growth happen: l Devote your life to Jesus Christ. Have you taken the step of receiving Jesus as your personal Lord and savior? This is the very first step such that the Holy Spirit comes into your life and helps you fulfill his commands (mark 1.17). l Deal with sin. Sin is one thing that inhibits spiritual growth. David in 1st Samuel 18, committed sin and in Psalms 32:3-5. He describes what happened to him during that year. He experienced the side effects of sin. Take a moment and focus on your life. Is there any sin you need to confess and repent of? Psalms 32:1 shows the blessing of forgiveness. After receiving the forgiveness of sin. The door is opened to true communion with God. l Discard spiritual laziness. This is a very crucial growth. We should discard spiritual laziness by devoting ourselves to reading the word, praying and fellowship. Spiritual laziness makes us have little or no time for personal devotions, bible study and fellowship. If we are to progress in spirit, we must choose to leave spiritual laziness. We shouldn’t choose the worldly pleasures over God’s word. l Decide the method of Growth. We should choose the methods of spiritual nourishments such as early morning devotions, access the bible study programme guide and through this, grow day by day as the song goes. “Read your bible and pray every day if you want to grow”. Friends this is a decision we must make personally, not for our pastors, chaplains, or even parents. l Be determined. We need to be learners. One of the ways of this is to find someone who can help to lead you upward and onward to spiritual maturity. For example a role model who can provide good counsel, guidance, and encouragement on a regular basis 2 Tim 2:2, Paul cautions us the importance of discipleship. l Dedicate your life to ongoing spiritual growth. This is a lifelong pursuit. We shouldn’t stop the process of spiritual growth at any one time. The benefits of spiritual growth include; having a greater intimacy with God, manifesting christlike behavior, giving your community the spiritual support they need and attaining the spiritual strength against temptation. |
