Joseph Musaalo, the university male counsellor has cautioned students on substance abuse noting that a 2004 World Health Organisation report ranked Uganda the leading consumer of alcohol in the world with a per capita consumption of 19.5 litres of alcohol per annum.
Uganda was closely followed by Luxembourg at 17.54 liters and the Czech Republic at 16.21 liters. Teaching from his sermon entitled; “Drug abuse and alcoholism,” Musaalo emphasised that shining for Christ means separating one’s self by practicing what is preached and not merely hearing. Citing Bible characters like Lot and Noah, Musaalo asked the UCU community to stay away from alcohol saying it impairs one’s judgment leading to acts that are consequential. “Most of these crimes you hear about in the media and elsewhere are committed under the influence of drugs. If you are in this category there still is hope for you. Come to Christ. You can also seek psychological therapy and rehabilitation,” said the counselor. He described a drug as a chemical substance which alters the way in which a body functions, thereby affecting the consumer physically, perceptually, behaviorally or emotionally. |
