Ten lecturers win excellence Award

Ten lecturers have won prizes for this year’s contribution to quality teaching at UCU. Out of the 29 academic staff nominated, only ten were chosen for the Awards for Excellence in Teaching for 2011.

Guild elections for Feb

The Electoral Commission of the university has set 29 February as the date for the guild elections.
The presidential election, according to the EC, will be held together with the parliamentary election, as has been the case in the past.

Include MDGs in curriculum, report urges universities

Only 23.4% of students in universities across Uganda and Kenya know about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the deadline for their achievement, a report released on 24 January by Save the Mothers and the UCU Devolvement Studies department, has revealed.

Talking to the nighbours..And enjoying it

Going to Bukoto recently, I was talking to Hassan from the back of a boda-boda. It was a Friday and I asked him what the imam had to say that morning.
“He talked about an honest day’s work to get your pay and have no problems,” said Hassan.
Hassan told me that he knew about UCU – he called it “a good place” – and when we parted we exchanged smiles and I gave him a few extra shillings.
It was a small reminder that Muslim – Christian dialogue in Uganda should be as natural as talking to one’s neighbours. Then again, Uganda’s minority Muslims are just that: our neighbours.
We already realize this. VC John Senyoni has publicly expressed his heart on the matter on several occasions. The university’s Theology department is getting more focused on Muslim outreach. UCU’s Global South Institute recently organized an open event at Nkoyoyo Hall that looked at Muslim issues.

The worth of writing and study skills

 Many of us unconsciously shake our bodies to Judith Babirye’s lyrical “Maama!” Isn’t she just wonderful? When I listen to music, some songs move me instantly and yet some do not even amuse me. There are many reasons for some songs to immediately become hits and others to fail. The major reason is that the particular musician is a highly skilled one.

Are we getting value for money

  Every year UCU increases tuition fees by a given percentage. Originally 10% it is now 13%.   
   That may be said to be a necessary development, given the unpredictable rate of inflation in the country. However, the question that keeps lingering in some of our minds is whether the students are getting what they are paying for.

Use your freedom wisely, Senyonyi tell new students

 The Vice Chancellor Dr. John Senyonyi, has advised new students to use their freedom well while at university.
In a message given during the induction of first- year students who joined this semester, Dr. Senyonyi said we live at a time when people are free to choose from a number of options, but that they should always be prepared to accept the consequences.
