Guild race begins

If you elect me...
Campaigns for UCU Guild Presidency kicked off last Thursday after the students' electoral body released names of three nominees who met requirements for the contest.

The final list was drawn basing on results submitted by different screening committees, the university administration's panel being the highest.
The Guild Presidential candidates are Rodney Bamusede, (LLB III), Alex Omweru, (BPAM II), and Shedrack Musinguzi, (BD II).
"The vetting exercise has ended successfully. We have already briefed the candidates, and they are now free to move around and solicit for votes," said Isaac Jonathan Otim, Chairman UCU Guild Electoral Commission.
"As we had communicated earlier, open air campaigns will be held on March 3, (Kampala Campus), and March 4, (UCU main campus). Elections are scheduled for March 5," Otim added.
According to the EC, 47 Guild Parliamentary hopefuls were also cleared to contest for 15 different constituencies in the students' parliament. Two nominees, Timothy Kyambadde, (BCDCM), and Kizito Opio, (Disability), were declared unopposed, leaving the 45 candidates to battle for 13 constituencies.
BCDCM and Disability constituencies elect one MP each; Presidential Constituency has three and the rest get two. MPs for Presidential Constituency are appointed by the sitting Guild President.
Other constituencies like Mass Com, Education, BBA, etc, will elect their representatives in May.
The EC, however, had to re-advertise for positions of MP, BCDCM after the initial nominees, (Hudson Musuuza and Bright Festo Balaku), were declared 'incapable'.
"All nominees for BCDCM scored very poorly in the vetting score sheets. The committee, therefore, unanimously agreed that they were not fit to be students' representatives," Otim said.
About the rules, the tough talking Otim said candidates must desist from malpractice saying his team will track down and severely punish culprits.
"The Electoral Commission will not tolerate any kind of electoral malpractice or abuse and those found in breach of its rules will be dealt with accordingly," he said adding that,
"Election is a very sensitive issue. If it is not handled properly, the society gets disorganized, dismantled and things don't get well."
