May the construction begin? The construction of UCU Hamu Mukasa Library, a project which demanded two years of fundraising has finally begun; at least the ground is broken. The library will be constructed in honour of Hamu Mukasa, a man who donated the land on which UCU stands today.
"We are dedicating the new library in honour of Mr. Hamu Mukasa, who gave the land on which the university now sits," VC Prof. Stephen Noll said during the ground breaking ceremony for the new library on February 12. He added that the absence of public and university library facilities impaired the development of school libraries and discouraged the development of the reading culture which is essential to academic and economic growth. "The challenge to achieve world class academic standards is no different for university students in Africa," Noll explained. The Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education, (NCHE), Prof. A.B.K Kasozi represented the Vice President, Prof. Gilbert Bukenya as the chief guest at the ceremony. Kasozi said that he was impressed with the performance of UCU graduates in the job market. "I am impressed by the performance of UCU students and I think that has a bearing on their upbringing," he said. While noting that some universities divert money intended for construction and restocking of libraries, Kasozi stressed that a library determines the strength of a university. "The quality of a university is determined by two factors, the academic staff that determine the value of the output, and the tools that they use; the Library," he said. The library that will cost about $4 million to construct is expected to be complete in a year's time and will have a sitting capacity of 1,200 students, a resource centre to power 200 computers and 250,000 volumes. |
