Bishop Barham guild president Amastiko, Niwegariho has started a philanthropic initiative code named Save-a -friend to help needy students complete tuition.  The initiative that was started last semester now boasts of having helped ten students complete their tuition fees.  This semester, they are hoping that the number will increase. They will be holding a number of fundraising activities like car washing and polishing of shoes to raise the money. The week has been dubbed Save-a-friend week.
In an interview with The Standard, Niwegariho said he started the initiative after he realised that a number of his colleagues were getting dead semesters and years as a result of very small fees balances. Apart from topping up tuition for needy students, they also do provide lunch for those who cannot afford and also use some of the money as condolence in times when a colleague loses a loved one.
Meanwhile, UCU Mbale campus is launching a loan scheme under which they intend to help needy students complete their tuition as well. The initiative is to be launched on November 5.
