Kyambogo University, for the second time, emerged winners of the annual Nkombazambogo Students’ Association (BANKOSA) cultural gala held on 2 October at Uganda Christian University Nkoyoyo Hall, taking home a shield and Shs200,000. UCU, who hosted the event for the first time, were the first runners-up and took a trophy and Shs100,000 at the event that brings together Baganda students from the different levels of learning. They were followed by Mutesa 1 Royal University who took a trophy.
The other contesting institutions who took part in competitions included Nsambya school of Nursing, Kampala University, who got certificates of merit and participation. The Deputy Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom, Mr. Israel Ssekimpi, who represented the Katikiro (Prime minister) as guest of honour at the event, urged the youth to be job creators, rather than job seekers. “You should work together as a team to create your own jobs instead of looking for jobs in this era of rampant unemployment. No one is going to hire you but yourself,” he said. The event was officially opened by UCU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Development and External Relations, Mr Doug Fountain, who represented the vice chancellor. Fountain was dressed in a white Kanzu (men’s cultural wear for Baganda). The hotly contested gala started in the afternoon and attracted big crowds of students, staff and Mukono residents who cheered the participants. The performances were packed with energy and passion as percussions filled the air with unique sounds of local drums. The participants were dressed in embugo (barkcloths), kanzu (white tunic) and gomesi (colourful long dress for women), as they presented folk dance, original compositions, plays, poems and the dance under the theme, ‘Omulembe Omutebi gujudde Okusoomoozebwa,’ meaning ‘today’s generation is full of challenges.’ UCU Nkobazamboga was awarded a certificate for the best original composition and the smartest choir. Simon Peter Ddamba of UCU scooped several certificates of merit, including the best overall performer and best poem recite. The chairman UCU Nkomba za Mbogo Students Association, Richard Kisuze, considered the event a milestone for the club. |
