The Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE) is to start a graduate training programme for its students that will see them get mentors at organisations, according to the president Eng. Jackson Mubangizi.
He revealed this while at Uganda Christian University during his lecture to the pioneer class of Bachelors of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering (BSCEE) on 2 November. The lecture was organisation to enlighten the students on the engineering profession in Uganda, “It is part of our five-year strategic plan, and with this the students will get structured training so that they can get people and organisations to grow and get experience from, instead of getting jobs in other fields not related to what they studied,” Eng Mubangizi said. He talked to the 46 pioneer students about UIPE and the engineering profession in Uganda, as part of the BSCEE first-year course unit- Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering. This graduate programme, intended to improve the quality of engineers, comes at a time when the profession has come under the spotlight due to common sights of buildings collapsing during construction. Graduate students will apply and upon admission, will be placed at an organisation and given a mentor. And according to Mubangizi, the students will be facilitated during the training. To become a corporate member of UIPE, one must get four years experience and training with an organisation. He advised students to apply for student membership because they would be eligible for the programme, and get chance to meet different people in the profession. |
