The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Chancellor of Uganda Christian University, the Most Rev Luke Orombi, has urged students to be faithful stewards of the gifts that God has given them.
He said this while addressing a large congregation at the Community Hour last Thursday during his visit to the Bishop Tucker campus.
“Stewardships means the ability to be accountable; you can be good stewards of your time, talent, properties, opportunity and above all your life,” Orombi said.
Using the example of Joseph in the Bible, he urged the congregation to rise up above the mentality of slavery, which he says creates fear and loss of self-esteem, but instead have faith in the gifts God has blessed them with.
“Many in Africa struggle with slavery mentality because of their history, I want to ask you who are seated here to rise up against that mentality and seize the opportunity of belonging to the continent of Africa,” he said.
For this he commended the Kenyans who are working in Uganda, especially in the hospitality industry, for being aggressive in going for things and getting them done without accepting failure. But said Ugandans could be even better if they could only realise the potential in them.
The Chancellor, who graduated over 1500 students at the end of last month, urged those who graduate to desist from sticking around Kampala and Mukono, but to go back to their communities upcountry and use their knowledge to make a difference.
Orombi who arrived on Wednesday evening and shared in the staff fellowship at the VCs home, spent the night at the university.
He met various groups within the university that included student leaders, the management team (deans and heads of department), administrative staff, and the university cabinet.
While meeting the Student leaders, he urged them to get mentors. He told them of his mentor, the late Archbishop Janani Luwum, who was an honest man and hardworking and taught him all these skills.
This is the second time in four months Orombi is visiting the university to come and spend time with people, the last time being last semester on 21 July.
