In a move to eliminate the infant ‘king’ of the Jews, King Herod has ordered mass killing of all male children of ages two and under. The decree that took effect yesterday is being effected all over Bethlehem and its vicinity.
Roman army commanders have warned that anyone found trying to save their child’s life will be death. A dark cloud now hangs over Bethlehem with loud weeping and mourning. Mothers have had their children snatched from their arms and each house thoroughly searched. This follows a visit to Bethlehem by three Magi who had seen a star-like heavenly body moving across the sky towards the city where the infant Jesus was. They were to travell all the way from the east to pay homage to the child-king. Information from the palace indicates that the magi want to know where exactly the prophesied Christ would be born but it is news to King Herod. Herod then sends them on their way but not before asking them to report where the child is if found. The ruler of Jerusalem says he too wants to go and pay homage to the child. However there had been no information so far. Herod last evening called an emergency meeting to determine where the child king would be born. An inside source who declined to be named said the meeting included the security cabinet, chief priests and teachers of the law. The outcome of the meeting yesterday determined that the king would be born in Bethlehem, Judea, in fulfillment of the written prophecy: “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.” According to the Jewish scriptures, the child would be born of a virgin and he would be called ‘Emmanuel’ which means: “God is with us” (Isaiah 7:14). It is also said that the government will be on his shoulders and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6). Other news reaching our desk is that shepherds keeping watch over their flocks in the night were visited by heavenly beings that confirmed the birth of the king of the Jews. The shepherds by press time were seen travelling toward Bethlehem to worship the king. |
