The Red Cross Society recently organised a blood donation drive at the Bishop Tucker Campus. Well, part of the exercise included the opportunity to test for HIV. That way you get to know your sero-status.

Danger on our roads

By Aggrey Mugisha, :: 10-10-2011

UCU’s community uses our deadly roads every day. Among the most deadly ones is Jinja Road known for its incredible ‘black spots.’ It was such a gut-wrenching experience to see pictures of four coffins of Daniel Mungyereza, his wife Lillian and their two children Jonathan and Nicole.

The death of Cecilia Nambozo, that primary school teacher who bled to death in Mbale Referral Hospital, left a lump in one’s throat. From media reports, Nambozo came to the hospital at the right time, had attended antenatal clinics there but lacked the money for the caesarian operation.

The Fighter in You

By Aggrey Mugisha, :: 26-07-2011

Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, also Uganda Christian University’s chancellor paid a visit to the Bishop Tucker Campus on 21st July.  In his sermon he urged his audience to borrow a leaf from some biblical characters such as Joseph, Joshua, Jeremiah, John and Hope.
According to archbishop Orombi, Ugandans have lost a lot in life because our general character lacks that fighting spirit which was exhibited in Joshua. To grow your leadership skills in your time at UCU you need to grow that fighter in you.  The fighter in you refuses to quit when confronted with daunting challenges.  Joshua helped the children of Israel to reach and conquer the Promised Land.
Life can be a wilderness it takes that heart of courage that confronts the harsh realities to see success. Orombi was spot on. We need to reject the tendency that accepts things as they are. Fighters are adventurous, taking risks where no one wants to dare. Our country will be a much better place if we stood up against for instance the tide of corruption that is eating the very soul of the nation.

Dialogue only way out

By Aggrey Mugisha, :: 05-05-2011

The cost of commodity prices and fuel has dominated the public discussion in the last couple of weeks. We are all affected.  How we respond is the critical issue. Some political leaders have chosen to protest by walking to work. Religious leaders and other civic voices have urged dialogue over the prices and other issues. Dialogue is always the best way forward. About thirty years ago after Zimbabwe got its independence through the Lancaster House Agreement, Joshua Nkomo who was a liberator remarked,“was it necessary that so many people should die?”  Had all the leaders sat down earlier 20,000 people would have been saved. That was Zimbabwe back then. We can draw a lesson from that situation; our leaders should have the courage in Uganda to talk to each other for the good of the country before more blood is spilled. A singing group called Latin Quarter wrote a song with the words, “Freedom don’t come easy, don’t come bloodless, and don’t come fast.” If the late Joshua Nkomo is right we can reduce the unnecessary deaths by talking.

A time to sow and a time to reap

By Aggrey Mugisha, :: 11-04-2011

Scripture in  Ecclesiastes 3:2 teaches us that in life there is a time to plant and another to harvest what is planted. As the UCU student body approaches exam period it is to show what was planted throughout the semester.
