In the last decade, UCU took education to the less-educated areas of Uganda. This was done by opening a college in Kabale and various other centres at regional level.
The services offered at these colleges, however, do not measure up to those that are offered at the main campus in Mukono. The problem is that the issues at Mbale are not dissimilar to those at Arua, Kabale or Kampala. The students at Kabale say they sometimes do not study because their lecturers are at the main campus. That, however, is yet to be verified. Although Kabale campus is connected to UCU via an internet link communication between the two campuses is only possible via mobile phones and the help of third parties. This does not get any better at Kampala campus where some documents printed from there have to be followed back to Mukono because of lack of similar facilities at Kampala campus. The internet at Kabale connects at snail speed on days when its available. This, however, is a rare occurrence. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Noll has, however, tried his best to see to is that the regional colleges share the meagre resources that UCU calls its own. For instance UCU has purchased a building for Mbale campus, will construct a girl's hall at Kabale and increase bandwidth plus acquire more space for Kampala campus. This is also being achieved with the able leadership of the regional centres. |
