With the arrival of the Seacom undersea cable at UCU, UCS has promised break neck speeds. So far so good but what will happen when the real abusers of the facility start doing what they do best? Refuse to share with others.
Will the university increase its budget allocations to satisfy the ever growing need for more and more bandwidth, will it limit access to such people and certain activity or will it team up other institutions to by the bandwidth in bulk? Of the above options, teaming up with other institutions to buy bulk bandwidth is likely more viable. Hopefully, early next year, UCU and a number of institutions will purchase bulk speed under RENU, a research based organisation. If this works, UCU could possibly have more than 35 megabits of connectivity speeds in January. RENU is the Research and Educational Network of Uganda. But in the mean time, responsible use of the limited resource could be achieved by; Having respect for other users on the network. Do not deprive them of the internet at peak time because you are watching a movie online. Avoid peer to peer sites because they have the tendency to take over priority from other users. Finally, social networking sites don’t only cripple productivity, but are meeting points used wrongly, and hosted on heavy platforms. If possible open their mobile pages on your web browsers, they are light and load faster. Saving everybody slow and frustrating connections.
