Prudent management

The events in our county are full of mixed feelings. On the negative side is the need for more freedom that the opposition is calling for.  On the positive side are the peaceful elections we had in February. A newly sworn-in president is back at the helm of things. Members of parliament are also about to be sworn-in. Then there is the pressure from the opposition calling attention to the harsh economic realities many Ugandans find themselves in. But just in case you thought the tough economic times are unique to Uganda, think again. Our neighbours such as Kenya are also feeling the economic pinch.
We need more dialogue from all our leaders on pertinent issues facing our society. The university is part of that market place of ideas. The scarce resources of the state  must be used prudently. The new parliament and government has a huge responsibility. The fight against corruption is part of that kind of management.
As the new semester begins here at UCU, our voices in the public debate should be heard. Our contribution as an institution of higher learning is important.
