News from Sudan is heartening and yet the struggle
continues (a luta continua). Independence for Sudan arrived on 9th of July this year. It came after years of war, displacement, hunger and many lives lost. We congratulate our brothers and sisters. Independence in many parts of Africa has been the story of a broken dream. We hope that Sudan will be different. As Southern Sudan becomes Africa’s 54th country, one needs to make a note of cautious optimism. Sharing the oil wealth is still an issue on the table. The export route through Port Sudan is in North Sudan needs clarification. The situation in Abyei and Southern Kordofan is still fluid. It is good to see the active role of the AU, UN, IGAD and the powers like the US and China as agents of peace. The cost of failure is too terrible to even imagine. Already the opportunities for Uganda and other East Africans are amazing. The business opportunities, jobs, consultancies and the expanded regional market Southern Sudan brings are a welcome development if peace is maintained. One can only pray for the leaders to do some deep level headed thinking and act accordingly. |
