Change is good

In September Uganda Christian University will have a new Vice Chancellor. Prof Stephen Noll who has been VC for the last ten years will retire and Rev. John Senyonyi will fill his shoes.

Prof Noll has no doubt done a tremendous job. His achievements are too numerous, having taken over a young university with no charter and barely 2,000 students.
Today UCU has a government Charter, the students are about 7,000 and the infrastructure would make a 2002 alumnus think he has lost his way.
If it was a question of popular vote, (students, staff and even the university council), Noll would be given a ‘third term,’ as Uganda’s politicians love to call it. But he has decided to retire.
A famous BBC journalist recently said “the countries that have developed are those that change leaders.” He included China in this category. Even though the Chinese do not have democratic elections, its leadership changes regularly.
So the fact the UCU’s leader is changing is in itself a very good thing for the institution. A new leader always sees somethings differently and can bring about faster growth than the previous one, however, good he has been.
Let’s pray that God gives our new VC the right lenses through which he can see things clearly and direct UCU to become A Centre of Excellence.
