The Students’ guild government at UCU is one of those organisations that were, as far as students are concerned written off a long time ago. The apathy is so great that average students do not know cabinet ministers or where guild offices are located.
Last week a student posed a question in reference to what the guild at UCU does. With exception of course to issuing guild vans in times of need and driving around in new vehicles in times of merry what else does the guild do? Students who know something about the guild associate it with swindling of funds while others think that it is made up of reverends and their sons and daughters! There have been incidents of corruption in the past, students, however, should know that it is not fair to label as bad this administration. The guild recently intervened on behalf of more than 15 students who faced dead years. Surely this is something good. Now the university administration needs to play an active role in supporting the guild. It should for instance co-opt and re-instate guild official communications during community hour. Nevertheless the student body also needs to actively engage the guild and not wait to make van requisitions or face dead year threats to approach the guild.
