Last week, UCU had the pleasure of seeing off two members of staff who have attained the retirement age. 
 
The two, Augustine Byaruhanga and Annette Mutesasira were some of the longest serving members of this community. 
The difference between them and us is they have retired before us and they were happy to retire. Many people do not anticipate a point in time when they will retire. It is for that matter that they hate the thought of adopting a new life. 
After a dedicated spell in the service of one’s master, one deserves to take some time off and enjoy the fruits of their work. 
One of the most disgraceful things is to leave your place of work because you were asked to leave for one reason or another. 
There is a lot of joy in your employer throwing a retirement party than to have security throw you out because of misconduct. 
As we all trek the path to retirement, let’s make the most of our present situation such that when we retire, we are remembered for the nice things we did, not the bad.
