Build for tomorrow

By Standard Admin, :: 22-09-2010

We have been reminded that, unlike much of the planet, Uganda has precious few well-trained journalists.

This is why administration got a    boulder-sized headache while seeking a new Standard supervisor. Skilled candidates didn’t que at the main gate.
With the loss of Wanyama Wangah and the imminent retirement of Ben Bella, two seasoned newspapermen with reporting backgrounds – UCU is left with a significant need for Ugandan journalists who can teach from life experience.
Without such, UCU becomes just  another institution disengaged from   culture, pumping out unemployable  mass communication graduates who  have never learned what makes a good    journalist: good writing, good reporting and good thinking.
With this, all Ugandans suffer. At least those who care about societal development. And truth.
The Standard, we believe, is a microcosm of the media training so  dearly needed across Uganda. It’s been imperfect.  But it has also been well-grounded in the ABCs of good journalism.
For that, we give thanks to all involved. And express the great need to continue ... and build for tomorrow.
