He holds a first class diploma from Makerere University and on October 2, Nicholas Kamusiime will graduate with a first class degree in the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS). He has a G.P.A of 4.50.
"I am not the cleverest of all, it is just by God's grace," he said. Kamusiime is the eldest in a family of 10 and like is the case for most African families he had to act as a role model to his siblings. But when his dad retired in 1998, the same year he finished his A' level, he got an extra role. "When my dad retired, the onus to educate my siblings fell on me," he said. To do this, Kamusiime had to find ways to generate income. Little wonder as his peers joined institutions to farther their education; Kamusiime started a brick laying project. Sometime in 2000, he received 'God sent' visitors. "I was laying bricks when my former headmaster sent for me," he recalls. When he went the headmaster offered him a job in the school library basing on his exemplary behavior as a student. This came as a golden opportunity for him to make things happen in his life. "I saved some money and in 2002 I was admitted to Makerere University for a diploma in library and information studies," he said. He used his savings and some more money from his uncle to pay his fees. "At Makerere my background dictated so much, I had no choice but to stay focused," he said. And this paid off because two years latter he graduated with a first class. During his holiday he got a job at UCU's library and because of this he forfeited his scholarship to do a bachelor at Makerere. At Makerere students who excel at the diploma level are often given scholarships to farther their education. "I considered the job because I needed the money, my siblings needed it too," he said. In January 2007 he enrolled for BLIS. "When people expect you to excel, you have no choice but to work hard," he said. To many of his classmates since he was already working they thought he knew it all and this motivated him. Kamusiime says it was not easy for him to balance work, class and family. "I work the evening shift, so I would attend class during day and at 5pm report to work," he said. Kamusiime is married and a father of three. He attended Ruhinda Secondary School for O' level and Kitagata Secondary School for A. Kamusiime is a university library assistant. |
