‘I would like to be self-employed in the next ten years.’ Emmanuel Kabugo may just be lucky to achieve his dream, after notching 24 points in Physics, Economics and Mathematics in last year’s UACE. His hope of becoming the best Electrical Engineer in the country, may seem like a long term goal, yet attainable Kabugo says that he did not believe his results the first time he sent a text to UNEB.
‘I sent three other messages to UNEB just to be sure and I got the same results each time,’ he said. He had expected to get 23points but reaped more than he wished for. He called his parents to share the good news. Thereafter, he hurried to the nearest Church to praise God for the miracle. Praying that day had just started. When he reached home, his parents had set time that night for prayer and thanksgiving. While in school, he was under a lot of pressure from his peers and teachers. Everyone referred to him as the ‘chaplain’s son. His mother is the Chaplain and a teacher of religious studies at the school. He knew that he had to sacrifice his ways and live a life that honoured his parents. Kabugo, who wants to pursue electrical engineering, says discipline is all it took for him to excel in his academics. “There’s no magic to excellence, hard work is what is required of all of us,” he said. He says that some of the few lessons he has learnt in life are; patience in all situations because they come and go and focusing on one’s dream. “When you forget your dream, you lose focus,” he says. He hopes to use his knowledge to bless the lives of the needy in the community. Kabugo was born to Rev. and Mrs Henry Katumba. Rev.Katumba is the UCU male Custodian.
