He defied fate and still lives on

He defied fate and beat the odds not to turn out as the irresponsible family less child that his society had hoped he would become.
Today, Charles Waiswa Luutu, a driver with estates department of UCU, is a family man, a proprietor of Blessed Bites Restaurant and also recently registered a tour and travel company called Rohi Travels.

Although he has only been in one formal business 14 months now Luutu has the ambition to become a hotel owner and a host of other businesses.
“At the moment i have to use the small business of a restaurant and hope that it grows from strength to strength to help me realise my dream,” Luutu said.
An ambitious man who was not accorded the luxuries of life that many kids of that age enjoyed, Luutu lived with his grandmother from the age of six months and hardly saw much of his mother, he neither knew his father nor did his father care until the day he got married a few years ago.
A calm spoken man and an attentive listener, Luutu shows signs of painful emotions at the mention of his childhood and the path that we call life that he has followed.
After dropping out of school in senior four, Luutu tried his hands at making candles. He also added the manufacture of tyre sandals to his CV before he learnt how to drive cars. A profession he now holds dear to his heart and one that has taken him places.
It is through the same profession that he made his first real breakthrough and an opportunity to further his education, that, however, did not happen because in his kind of employment you do not really have a programme of your own but that of your employer.
That has, however, not deterred him from pursuing a dream of a better future for himself. He for example graduated last month from a short business course that he hopes will empower him to nurture his business ambitions.

“In future, i hope to further my hand at business, as a step to that, i have registered a Tour and Travel Company called Rohi, hopefully my own community will be supportive,” said Luutu.
A straight forward and somewhat shrewd business man, Luutu has tried so hard to make ends meet; he, for instance supplied the UCU staff canteen before it was deemed cost effective to have the supplies made by the kitchen.
Recently he tried to get back into that trade after the suspension of bites at Thelma Hall, this too did not materialise into much but he is not about to give up.
“For a moment, i was not sure if i would get the green light on this venture, but the fact that i got a nod from the health inspector is a boost to me, seeking permission was one way of making sure that i close gaps on shoddy work.”

Last year, he changed the face of fast food and restaurant business in Bugujju, an upcoming area of Mukono , when he set up Blessed Bites Restaurant with emphasis on hygiene and customer care above profit maximisation.
Born and raised in Luwero, Luutu was an only child although he has other siblings many of whom he does not know.
He attended school at Kasana UMEA (Uganda Moslem Education Association) from P1 to P7 before moving on to Luwero Secondary School for S1 to S3 and then Seeta Secondary School where he sat his O level leaving exams.
“I left and came to leave in Seeta with my cousin because life in Luwero had become unbearable, my step mother viewed me with a lot of suspicion and my grandmother was no longer able to cater for me, my experience in Seeta, however, was very beneficial and am happy that i lived with my cousin.”
Married to Norah Nakintu, Luutu has two children and lives in Bugujju but attends church at Seeta. He has a biological son, Elyon Jesse Luutu and a foster child whom he entirely provides for.
Being Born Again has been the biggest miracle of his life, it has taken him to places and to people that he had resigned himself from.
“When I got saved, i got friends, God put me among people of stature, and He also led me to various employment opportunities, He got me the chance to further my education and also funding for whatever business i would want to venture into.”
So far, many of his wishes will have to stay only but as dreams because he is a man who wants to achieve whatever he sets his eyes on. The only way to do that is to follow the procedures to the book.
With time Luutu wishes to go back to school.
“I want to go back to school some day, that, however, will happen after i am self employed and fully reliant on my means.”
