When Rev. Amos Turyahabwe Tindyebwa was appointed Head of Department, Foundation Studies, his heart filled with excitement. He was excited, not because he has become a ‘boss’, rather, God has granted him a chance to face new challenges.

“This is an opportunity to face new challenges. I have served in this department before, but not in this capacity. Now I have more responsibilities; supervising lecturers, coordinating between Foundation Studies and other departments as well as planning for the department,” he said.
“Since I am a lecturer, the appointment obviously brings me more workload. I know there are benefits that come with the post, but above all, I expect to work more closely with my bosses because I am now closer to them,” he added.
Given its uniqueness, Foundation Studies also has its own challenges.
Unlike other departments, it handles all students who pass through the university. It teaches biblical courses like Old and New Testament, which are resisted by non-Christian students.
Despite the challenges, Rev. Turyahabwe isn’t scared. Instead, he says, the pride of serving in a department, which sits at the center of UCU educational philosophy, ‘character formation’, gives him undying motivation.
“Foundation Studies falls at the center of what UCU stands for; producing graduates with Christian characters, philosophy of education for life. My satisfaction comes from my contribution to a process, which will help produce ideal graduates.
We don’t want graduates who are just sound academically, but morally and spiritually. We want to promote honesty and integrity,” he said.
Asked what new plans he has for the department, Turyahabwe said,
“I am taking over from a man who had introduced me to good strategies and spirit of team work. We shall continue with ongoing strategies and devise other means whenever needs arise. The department will split classes into small and manageable tutorial groups and work out modalities to help our tutors upgrade and get promoted.”
Turyahabwe’s educational background.
Having attended Ruhinda SS for O and A levels , Turyahabwe obtained a Certificate and Diploma in Theology at Mcallister College, Kyogyera and Bishop Barham, (both BTTC affiliates). He later joined UCU where he obtained a Bachelor of Divinity, PGDE and Massters of Arts in Theology in 2001, 2002 and 2006 respectively.
Turyahabwe had earlier served at various levels and institutions, but was recruited as Teaching Assistant at UCU in 2002 before climbing the ranks to position of Senior Lecturer
