All roads led to the Eastern Uganda, Kumi, in commemoration of the Aporu Okol Annual International Tournament on June 25 and 26 at Boma grounds. The two day tournament saw
over thirty teams tussle it out for gold, with five coming from the neighbouring country, Kenya. The bubbling Okol had to its honour the last year’s defending champions Malava girls who then had come two down to outstrip Nkumba 3-2 in the best of five set count. Four other teams from Kenya including three high schools were represented: Bungoma Volleyball club, Kamak, Mukumu boys and Lugulu girls. Most Ugandan teams made it to the competition. This was pointed out by the vice president Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF) Nason Bwesigye. “The turn-up was excellent posing a stiff competition,” he said. The UCU Deacons and both Doves teams could not proceed to the finals as they were knocked out in the quarters and semis. The Deacons were eliminated by Sport S 3-0 in the first knock-out stage. While the Doves teams were fazed out in the semis by the Malava Girls and Nkumba University on 3-0 each. “All our teams played so well, but part of the losses came due to poor officiating. We are looking forward to our remaining first leg league games against Ndejje, Tiggers and Uganda Police Defense Force (UPDF),” he said. The Sport S had its full house to beat Nkumba 3-2 in the finals. Lawrence Yakan who now plays professional volleyball for the Rwanda national team tormented Nkumba when he made eight consecutive blocks to bring Sport S back to play. The momentous infusion was a fresh impetus that aided the 3-2 victorious ending. Malava girls failed to stand in the way of Prossy Olobo who edged Nkumba to claim a 2-0 victory in the women’s club finals. However, Malava fought hard in the institutions category against Lugulu girls, the 2009 champions. The game was prematurely terminated due to time bounds yet to be completed from Kenya. The federation is working out a strategy that will promote the tournament to Rwanda and Burundi. “We intend to suggest to Mrs. Aporu who is now an MP of the region to slot in cash prizes to attract more teams,” he said. |
