“Thank you,” Alex Button spoke in a low-toned voice. As he received a Chelsea jersey, his farewell present from his
coach Tonny Kenneth Membe. His trembling lips split apart into a smile. However, tears welled up in his eyes as a group of friends curdled him in the tearful farewell on June 30 at the UCU old pitch. He is the first kid with whom the UCU Kids soccer started in 2006. He was only four years then. His muse is friends and his father who was a soccer player. Alex is a Chelsea fanatic just like his father. He never misses Didier Drogba his favourite player. Watching Drogba’s flamboyant ball control has driven him into loving the sport passionately. “He is respectful and obedient and hardly missed a training session,” said Membe. He played with a group of African teammates with whom he wasn’t initially so free with but as time went by they became so cohesive and great friends. “I have learned almost everything from coach Tonny and will dearly miss my friends. I hope I can meet them some day so we can play together and have some fun games” said Alex. One of his closest friends, Jacob Scully explains that they shared a lot as friends besides them being peers. “It was really fun playing with Alex and travelling together I will dearly miss him,” said Scully. Alex stood between two extremes; the joy of joining his grandparents and the sadness of leaving his friends. “It was a normal thing for me to visit my homeland, I feel so bad that I am leaving Uganda forever except if we come for visits,” he summed-up. |
