UCU Knights promising at chess league

Vincent Kimera against Kamau former national coachBrains raced against time in a heated Chess tournament kick-off at Hotel Africana on Sunday July 17. The UCU Knights chess team battled in two rounds against the top-ranked Mulago and Mengo chess clubs.
UCU emerged seventh with a five-point aggregate.
Out of the five boards against the defending champions during the first round, UCU lost four boards and managed a draw on one board to earn half-a-point.
However, they gathered four-and-a-half points in the second round against Mengo, getting them better placed.
 Two of the UCU Knights boards were awarded a bye after opponents failed to turn up for the play. Deng Manyok and Timothy Mukungu were awarded each a free point. UCU’s Innocent Kimera beat Kamau, the former national coach, to pocket one point.
 Lady UCU Knight, Agatha Ninsiima won UCU half-a-point through a tie with Petra Nalutaaya of Mengo.
Mulago Knights led the pack with 9.5 points, followed by Mulago Kings (9) while City Chess Club came third with (8) points. The next meet is scheduled for August 7 at Hotel Africana.
The Vice Chairperson of Uganda Chess Federation Mr. Stephen Kasuze, FIDE ARBITER, commended the improvement in the management and attendance.
The club still lacks stable funding and therefore runs on the subscription fees from the clubs.
“The new members pay subscription fee of Sh.200,000 and Sh.100,000 annual fee. The old members pay only the annual fee,” he explained.
