“Oh no, 6-0” shouted one of the UCU fans. That was the final score of a friendly game between
UCU ladies soccer team and Hearts United of Kampala. The game was played on the UCU old soccer pitch on July 13. The top division team Hearts was better placed to score two goals early in the fifth and seventh minutes through Prossy Achayo. Ten minutes to half-time, Brenda Makanga slammed in two more goals to bring the score to 4-0. During second half, UCU failed to convert a penalty they had been awarded because of a foul, while Hearts pocketed two more goals through Achayo, making it 6-0. “It was a fun game. The UCU team has no experience. That’s why they do not know what to do with the ball. Football is not learnt in a day,” said Jacinta Nambafu of Hearts United. The ladies team has been in existence for four years. They competed in the 13th MTN Intervarsity Games where they won a bronze medal. The team is to visit Makerere University on Friday, July 29, for a friendly game. Later, they will host Mukono High School in preparation for the intervarsity games in December. “It is hard to train the ladies because most of them have lectures running till late. This explains the loss,” said UCU coach Tonny Membe. |
