The university athletics field events team of four received an additional boost in technique, balance, posture
and stability from Jared Hidber in early July at the UCU gymnasium and sports complex. Upon his two-week visit to Uganda from British Columbia, Canada, he offered to give a hand in areas of deficiency on the team. He is a student at Victoria University, studying for a health and recreation degree. The 21-year-old has a passion for sports, besides being an ice hockey player. “I also work as a conditioning coach in ice hockey schools and at sports stores,” said Hidber. He pointed out that a good field events team must be dedicated to strengthening work-outs, flexibility and perfection of technique. “An athlete must do both dynamic and static stretching to loosen up the tensed muscles so as to effect flexibility in movement,” he said. He was happy that the athletes were quick to learn to sustain balance on a single leg, which improves the distance thrown. Hidber is expected back next year to help enhance the team’s strength in the gym as well as flexibility which he noted were areas of struggle. The sports department received two footballs and a pump during the courtesy visit. |
