The Chess League entered its second day on Sunday July 31 at Hotel Africana with 16 clubs battling it out in  the two-round robin games.
The UCU Knights made a good start in the morning against Kireka Chess Club. The Knights gathered three boards out of the five played, to walk away with two points. However, they succumbed to a loss against the top-ranked Mulago Kings Chess Club.
Kireka’s Robert Muhinda could not sustain the game after the 34th move against Knights’ Deng Manyok. Muhinda therefore tendered his resignation in mid-game.
Knights board, Innocent Kimera, took advantage of the sacked Chris Turyahabwe, causing him to surrender on the 48th move while Agatha Ninsiima was awarded a bye after the opponent failed to turn-up for play. The Knights were subjected to a tighter contest against top-ranked Mulago Kings in the afternoon to lose all the five boards.
Mulago’s Kakooza deployed the Czech’s move in the opening game which paralysed Timothy Mukungu of Knights, forcing him to resign on the 23rd move.“This was a very strange move which I had no clue of and it takes time to discover such,” said Mukungu.
There was a bit of cold wind in Emma Baligeya against the Olympiad and former national champion Grace Nsubuga. Baligeya who was playing white lost the contest in the end game. Knights lost three more boards, letting Mulago win. The team is now preparing for the next meet set on Sunday August 14 at Hotel Africana.
