The record was no more. Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club on Saturday July 23 shattered Doves’ unbeaten record in the women’s
volleyball with a 3-2 defeat in a close tie at Makerere University Sports Complex. Having won 15 matches in a row during the first and second leg, the Doves regretted the loss. The veterans rallied against the young stars claiming the first two sets before the doves leveled the sheets in the third and fourth set to push the game to the decisive set. “We were over confident and undermined our mother club,” said MVP Julia Sakaya. The Doves clinched on the first half of the decisive set with a 9-5 point. This seemed a sure win for the ladies. However, the veteran team deployed expertise to drag the Doves to 14 ups. The Doves lost concentration, exhibited poor reception and court cover to resign on 16-14 bringing the game to 3-2 final set score. “We never had a coach to control our slim bench despite the fatigue. All the same we are still on top of the table and determined to win the league,” added Sakaya. The play-offs will be held after the Nations Cup Women in Nairobi due in August. Doves’ Julia Sakaya and Olive Aryemo have been training with the team in preparation for the Championship. This will be followed by the All-African-Games in Maputo Mozambique. |
