The UCU Shepherds will soon have to defend their title during the university rugby league kick-off on September 18. The team will also have an opportunity to compete in the second division of the National league.
So far four universities have confirmed their participation: Makerere University, Makerere University Business School, Nkozi University and the league’s defending champions, the Shepherds. The games will be hosted on rotational basis by the registered universities unlike the home-and-away structure. The sports department will accommodate 30 players, who will represent UCU in both leagues. “We need to be consistent during training and to understand each other if we are to defend the title,” said captain Andrew Omoding. Rugby is defined by its fans as a sport, but as defined by its players, it is life. The sport originated from the Rugby School of England. While playing football in 1823, William Web Ellis grabbed the ball in his hands and ran with it, this sparked an interest and led to the creation of rugby. Cambridge adapted the game, popularized it and made rules for the game. The first Rugby Union was formed in 1971. The name Rugby originated because of where the spring idea came from, which was the Town of Rugby in the local school. It is now a massive part of the world-wide sport. |
