It was a somber Sunday, with the weather and the UCU Knights. The team lost to Mulago Pawns and drew with Makindye Chess Club in the seventh and eighth rounds respectively during the on-going Chess League. The games were played at Hotel Africana on August 28.
Sixteen clubs battled out in the two rounds of the league. The Knights got a rough treat after they were slapped down 4-1 by Mulago Pawns and later exhibited equal strength against Makindye in the eighth round to share the points.

The Knights walked away with three-and-a-half points after the two rounds.
“This is our worst performance ever since the league started but we hope to pick up in the second round,” said Mukungu.
Despite the poor performance by the team against the Pawns, Kimera and Mukungu redeemed the Knights to share the spoils with Mulago’s Richard Kato and Richard Buyinza in the seventh round while the rest lost all their games.
Knights board two Innocent Kimera was outstanding against Makindye’s Augustine Rwange, after he piled his rooks, prompting Rwange to make a prematrure suck, in which he sacrificed his knight for a pawn. Kimera retaliated with a double knight attack, the opponent retreated to attack Kimera’s rook, which later captured Rwange’s queen. This forced the opponent to resign on the 29th move after losing his pawn on P2.
Timothy Mukungu playing white deployed the French opening and had an edge up to the 20th move shortly before the opponent recovered to render his extra pawn of no avail. The game ended in a stalemate with an equal point tally.
The lady contestant Agatha Ninsiima of Knights lost all her games to Amanda Kyomugisha and to a ten-year-old Stella Babirye. Jonathan who had his first game in the league went down in both rounds.
Mulago Chess Club is outstanding after winning all its games on 5-0 against Bank of Uganda and 3.5-1.5 against Barclays Bank Chess Club.
Mulago is leading the table after amassing 34 points while City Chess Club is second with 32.5 points.
The Knights is eleventh with 16.5 points as Uganda Chess Club seals the base with 4.5 points only.
