The UCU athletics team has signed two middle distance runners bearing high profiles. Hadi Nsamba, fresh from St. Lawrence Pare Palais and Ivan Wesonga from Makerere University, are now part of the UCU athletics team. The coach, Timothy Kabuye, said this venture was quite timely following the unsteady composition of the squad every season when athletes complete their courses.
“I hope these athletes will be outstanding to replace Geoffrey Akena, Lazarus Inya, Kassim Latigo and Prossy Nalukanga,” said Kabuye. The two have represented Uganda in various international meets. Nsamba, who is great at both 200 and 400 metres, has represented Uganda twice at international meets. In 2009, he represented the country in Ethiopia during the African Youth Athletics Championships in September where he finished third in both races. That very year he competed in the World Youth Athletics Championships in Italy where he emerged eighth overall. Wesonga has competed in the recent World University Games in India and has confirmed his involvement in the activities of the team. He is a two-time third-finisher and a silver medalist in the National Trials. The team looks forward to the intervarsity games set for December in Ndejje University. Meanwhile, Demas Praise is showing a steady recovery from an ankle sprain he got three months ago. Lulu Laini, a silver medalist in 400 and 800 metres in both the East African University Games and the National Trials, has promised to come back for a degree after successfully completing her diploma in IT. “We can’t stop the transition of our athletes but scout for replacement and improve what we have,” says Kabuye. |
