Knights struggle in league

Despite Bank of Uganda being the last on table in the ongoing Chess League Tournament, they put up a high resilience to snatch two sets from the Knights of UCU who won on 2-3 in the ninth round. The games were played at Hotel Africana on September 11.
In the two rounds, the Knights battled with Civil Aviation Chess Club and Bank of Uganda in the ninth and tenth rounds respectively.
Aviation which is the silver medalist in the league gave Knights a deafening 4-1 defeat to place them a notch higher in the table standing.
Knights reclaimed themselves through Innocent Kimera and Emmanuel Baligeya who earned the team one-and-a-half points.
Knights’ outstanding performer Kimera refused to be defeated by Steven Kisuze of Aviation. Kisuze, who is the four-time Olympiad and an international arbiter was tasked to prove his worth but failed this part of the test after he lost to the Knight.
Board three Emmanuel Barigeya drew with the chairman Uganda Chess Federation to share the spoil.
The Knight adapted a Schvenikov variation of the Sicilian defence to outsmart Kisuzi on move 32.
Instead of the Knight, Kimera, playing the queen on B5 he played it on B6, provoking Kisuze to misplay his, which gave Kimera an advantage to control the centre. He then launched massive attacks causing Kisuze to sacrifice the knight leading to his eventual fall.
The Knights, however, stepped up their game in the second round to amass three points over Bank of Uganda who had two. This was through Agatha Ninsima who got a bye after Elizabeth Rutaro failed to turn up. Kimera and Mukungu both shared spoils with Neogy Sepuya and Moses Watulo while Emma Baligeya delivered a full package to aid the win.
The team is ranked eighth with nine points.
